Cape Town – A 31-year-old officer, who fatally shot his girlfriend Lebo Monene at Tembisa Hospital in Gauteng before turning the gun on himself last week, is reportedly awake but in critical condition.

According to The Citizen, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson, Grace Langa confirmed that the officer can open his eyes but he is unable to talk and is still on a ventilator.

It remains unclear when he will be able to appear in court. However, the Ipid has submitted a letter outlining his condition to the court, which will decide on a date suitable for the suspect to appear and speak for himself.

According to a statement released by the Gauteng Department of Health, the police officer entered the facility on February 9 around 08:00 while driving a state vehicle.

He then called his partner who was on duty at the time to come to the parking lot.

“Upon arrival, the police officer opened fire on the Enrolled Nursing Assistant and turned the gun on himself,” the statement said.

Monene will be laid to rest in her home village of Marulaneng in Mokopane this weekend, EWN reported.
